Like the other seven German Academies, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities has the legal status of a public corporation.
The Academy is chaired by the president who is elected for a term of three years. He represents the Academy in public and is the employer of all members of staff. The president’s office is an honorary position and thus without remuneration. It is possible to reelect the president after three years; the two classes usually take turns in nominating a candidate. The president is assisted by the executive board which is formed by four Class Secretaries as well as the president’s precursors in office. Moreover, the president is assisted in administrative duties by the secretary-general.
